The Big Dipper Navigation Time Trace

The Guibiao, an astronomical instrument crystallizing millennia of Chinese wisdom, consists of a vertical gnomon (Biao) and a horizontal scale (Gui). It was used for observing celestial phenomena and measuring time.

The gnomon determines key solar terms by measuring the sun’s shadow at noon, enabling the calculation of the tropical year—a testament to ancient insight into natural cycles.

Its two discs feature the Big Dipper and the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions with measured angular distances, preserving some of the oldest astronomical data.

Inspired by this, Seagull has woven this millennia-old wisdom into modern watchmaking, carrying the mysteries of time and stars on the wrist.

E:The Big Dipper

The ancient Chinese astronomers divided the sky along the celestial longitude into twenty-eight unequal segments near the ecliptic and celestial equator, each called a xiu (mansion).

For each xiu, a representative star was chosen, and the entire asterism was named after its radiance—thus the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions came into being.

With the changing seasons, the position of the Big Dipper in the dial shifts accordingly—particularly the direction of its "handle." Its orientation corresponds to the four major solar terms (Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Autumn Equinox, Winter Solstice) as follows:

*At the Spring Equinox, it points due east.
*At the Summer Solstice, it points due south.
*At the Autumn Equinox, it points due west.
*At the Winter Solstice, it points due north.

B:Begin of Summer
C:Begin of Winter
D:Begin of Spring

The Chinese Sexagenary Cycle is a traditional chronological system that combines ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches to form a recurring sixty-year cycle, embodying ancient wisdom in tracking time.

Watch Crown Operation Guide

1. Adjusting the Starry Sky Dial:
Press button P1. Each press rotates the starry sky dial counterclockwise by one day.

2. Manual Winding:
With the crown in Position ①, turn it forward (clockwise) to wind the mainspring. Continue until fully wound (when you feel increased resistance).

3. Time-Setting Procedure:
Gently pull the crown out to Position ③. The second hand will stop. Rotate the crown to set the hour and minute hands to the correct time.

Element Explanation

The Twenty-Eight Mansions are part of the Chinese constellations system. They reflect the movement of the Moon through a sidereal month.

The Twenty Four Solar Terms are the periods in traditional Chinese lunisolar calendars that matches a particular astronomical event or signifies some natural phenomenon. The points are spaced 15° apart along the ecliptic and are used by lunisolar calendars to stay synchronized with the seasons, which is crucial for agrarian societies. The solar terms are also used to calculate intercalary months; which month is repeated depends on the position of the sun at the time.

The sexagenary cycle, also known as the stems-and-branches, is a cycle of sixty terms, each corresponding to one year, thus a total of sixty years for one cycle, historically used for recording time in China and the rest of the East Asian cultural sphere and Southeast Asia. It appears as a means of recording days in the first Chinese written texts, the Shang oracle bones of the late second millennium BC. Its use to record years began around the middle of the 3rd century BC.

Big Dipper. The centre dial can be rotated and adjusted to indicate how the night sky should look according to each season by displaying the respective position of the Big Dipper.
